Answers to common questions

What is Downly?
Downly is a native Mac app for saving videos and audio from supported websites. It also includes tools to convert, compress, trim, crop, merge, and edit your files.
Which websites work with Downly?
Downly works with many sites, including YouTube, X, and Pinterest. Availability depends on the site and the individual video; private, restricted, or protected videos may not be downloadable.
Do I need to install any other tools?
No. Downly includes the tools it needs. It runs on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs with macOS 13 or newer.
Can I choose the video quality?
Yes. After you paste a link and select Analyze, Downly shows the formats available for that video. You can choose a video quality or download audio only.
Will every video download as MP4?
Only when a compatible MP4 source is available. Some high-resolution videos use other source formats. You can download the original and convert it in Downly afterward.
Can I download subtitles?
Yes. When subtitles are available, you can choose a language and save the selected track as an SRT file alongside the video.
What are Recipes?
Recipes save your preferred download folder, quality, file type, subtitles, filename style, and size limit. Select one before downloading instead of choosing the same settings each time.
Can I choose the size of a compressed video?
Yes. Compress Video lets you set a target size and shows an estimated result before processing. The finished size may vary because video content affects compression.
Will Downly change my original files?
Editing tools create new output files. When converting a completed download, Downly can move the downloaded original to Trash after the new file is successfully created, if that option is selected.
Do I need to sign in to YouTube?
Usually, no. YouTube may sometimes require sign-in or verification for a particular video or connection. If that happens, Downly will show the available session options in Settings.
How do updates work?
Choose Check for Updates in Downly or Settings. When an update is published, Downly will offer it for you to review and install.
Why does macOS show a warning when I first open Downly?
Downly is currently distributed without Apple notarization. If you downloaded it from maclabb.com and trust the file, follow the Start Here guide included in the DMG to approve its first launch in macOS Privacy & Security.
How does activation work?
Enter the license key and purchase email from your receipt. Downly saves the activation securely in your Mac’s Keychain. You can check its status or deactivate this Mac in Settings.
